Q & A with the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center’s Shanae Pritchard

The Children’s Museum recently began offering Science Connections at the Bridgehampton Child Care & Recreational Center. Designed with the next generation engineers, physicists, chemists, and computer programmers in mind, the weekly after school program promotes science education through fun, accessible projects. We spoke with Shanae Pritchard, the After School Director, to learn more about the Center, her role there, and how Science Connections has been received.

Can you tell us a little about the Bridgehampton Child Care Center?

It’s been here forever, since the 50s. It’s a community place for kids to come and have a safe place and participate in different activities and be exposed to different things. We offer so much…art, karate, clay, chess, tennis, basketball…we have a Scrabble club and a teen program. We also do a great deal of outreach in addition to partnering with a lot of different groups to bring in workshops. Most of the kids are from Bridgehampton, but we have a few students who live in other areas too!

What’s your role at the Center?

I’m going on my second year where I run the after school program. It’s been great. Not many teachers get the opportunity to just get down with students and play with them how they want, whether it’s basketball or tag. I’m a teacher, so I love being with kids and helping in any way I can. I love working with them and seeing them grow in different ways. I like to be involved.

What do the kids think about Science Connections?

It’s been going really, really well. The kids have been so excited and they’re learning so much. They love the different projects that the Museum brings each week.
