January 2014 – Letter from the Director

Dear Friends,

Earlier this month, CMEE Educator, Chef Alan built a scale model of CMEE out of gingerbread, which was then decorated by children at the Museum. This is the view from the Museum’s amphitheater.

Happy New Year! On December 31, hundreds of children and parents “rang in” 2014 at the stroke of noon during our 6th Annual New Year’s Eve Ball Drop. You can check out some of the photos from the Ball Drop in this month’s newsletter.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to CMEE’s Annual Appeal and enabled us to reach our goal this month! Your support allows CMEE to continue serving as a vital community resource for local families in the East End. I’m also grateful to Buckley’s Flower Shop for donating a Christmas tree to CMEE again this year. Check out our video of Museum staff decorating the tree.

To make way for the new miniature golf course, CMEE is reshaping the yard to the southwest of the Museum. These two images show “before” and “after” the excavation of the yard.

During 2014, CMEE will update and enhance many of its exhibitions. Work has already started on the new outdoor miniature golf course. A couple of weeks ago, we broke ground by removing the windmill and play structure, and transferring much of the shrubbery to other locations on the property. We anticipate starting to construct the holes and pathways ahead of schedule early next year.

In February, CMEE has planned two great benefits! On the 6th, moms can join their pals for our Ladies Night Out. Generously donated and hosted by Fresh in Bridgehampton, 100% of proceeds benefit the Museum. On February 25, we are honoring the contributions of three incredibly important former trustees – Beatrice Alda, Natalie Barth, and Victoria Graham – at the annual CMEE in the City dinner at Riverpark restaurant in New York.

On New Year’s Eve, CMEE distributed building block banks to children interested in helping CMEE’s capital campaign. Their change can help change CMEE! If your family would like a bank, please call or drop by the Museum.

As CMEE looks to grow and serve more needs in the future, we are delighted to have assistance from Booz Allen Hamilton in updating the Museum’s strategic plan. After interviewing CMEE members, trustees, community residents and other stakeholders early next year, they will help CMEE develop a vision, objectives, and benchmarks for the Museum’s new strategic plan.

CMEE has already planned a wonderful schedule of programs for 2014 and I hope you’ll join us often to learn through play at the Museum this year.

Sincerely,

Stephen Long
Executive Director
