Letter from the Director – May 2012

Dear Friends,

At CMEE, we are very excited about all of our upcoming public programming, including Peconic Family Fun Day, the Baby Bliss group for new parents, and Get Creative weekend workshops. In addition, there is plenty happening behind the scenes at the Museum.

First, CMEE has completely changed its programming for school groups. In response to recommendations from teachers, CMEE’s field trips now incorporate much more dramatic and active play. Students use specific Museum exhibits as “stage sets” and role play as different members of the community. While children play and have fun, the new school programs enable teachers to meet New York State Learning Standards. And for schools that can’t come to the Museum, CMEE has developed outreach programs that take the experience into the classroom. Thank you to all of the community members, educators, and especially the Children’s Logical Learning Service for helping CMEE meet the needs of teachers. You can learn more about CMEE’s new school programs on our website.

Second, Leah Oppenheimer and Barbara Blaisdell have created a parents’ advisory council with families involved in the Cantemos Musica family literacy program at CMEE. The council had its first meeting recently where they gave feedback on the program and suggested strategies for increasing the program’s audience. Thank you to Leah, Barbara, and all of the parents who participated!

Looking ahead, we’re offering a full slate of classes this summer in art, tumbling, science, gardening, and music, along with weekly performances in our outdoor amphitheater. In addition, we’re planning our annual family fair, CMEE’s summer fundraiser for July 21. Save the date!

Because of your interest and support, CMEE can enrich the lives of children and families and strengthen the East End community. I’m very grateful!

Sincerely,

Stephen Long
