Letter from the Director – October 2012

Dear Friends,

After ten days of cleaning and refreshing the Museum last month, CMEE is set for a new season of programs, workshops, and special events! Don’t miss “Pizza and Pajama Night” this Friday, “Play with Clay” on October 13, and our annual Halloween Bash on Friday, October 26. CMEE is always delighted to collaborate with arts, cultural, and service organizations in the community. Last month, we were happy to be represented at the East End Special Education PTO’s Family Fair. This coming weekend, CMEE participate in the Sylvester Manor’s Plant and Sing Festival on Shelter Island. Please come by to say hello!

Speaking of planting, drop by CMEE to pick some tomatoes, parsley, or mint in CMEE’s garden. This is the remaining bounty from CMEE’s “Roots and Shoots” classes where children met this spring and summer to plan, plant and tend the garden at the Museum.  Working collaboratively through nature, art, and science activities, children in the class began to build an awareness of our natural environment and the importance of caring for it.  Children tilled the earth, planted seeds, weeded the garden, watered their seedlings, and harvested their crops.  CMEE kids had fun making homemade herbal soap with rosemary, mint and thyme picked from the CMEE garden and harvesting ripe vegetables that were served as part of CMEE’s healthy lunch program for museum visitors.  This is just one of the many programs that CMEE offers where children learn together through imaginative play. We’ll start the next “Roots and Shoots” class in the spring of 2013, but in the meantime, check out CMEE’s website for a list of our current classes and workshops.

I hope to see your family playing soon at CMEE.

Sincerely,

Steve Long
Executive Director
