Classroom Protocols
Please dress yourself and your child comfortably, because our classes involve movement and dancing. Food, toys and other distractions are not permitted in the classroom. In the interest of having enriching classes, any child who, in the opinion of Marlene, is being disruptive, will be asked to leave the class until the child has calmed down.

Materials
At the beginning of each semester, Marlene will distribute materials that are specifically designed for that class. These materials typically include an instrument or other prop (such as a scarf) and an audio CD. The cost of these materials is included in each semester’s tuition. You will not be charged anything additional for these materials, but you are responsible to being these materials with you to class every week. There is a charge of $35 to replace lost or damaged materials.

Please Don’t Compare
It’s important to allow your child to respond when ready and not to compare him or her with other children in the class. As you know, children develop at different rates and have different learning schemes. There is no “right” way to respond to the activities in our classes. Children who quietly observe or choose to explore during activities are as actively engaged as those who physically participate in each activity. They are benefitting from the musical environment we create together in our classes.

Parent and Caregiver Participation
Our classes are most successful when parents and caregivers actively participate in class (and at home!). Don’t worry about your own musical competence. What’s important is that you are demonstrating respect for and enjoyment of music through your participation. In doing so, you are modeling the joy of music making and music appreciation.

Listen, sing, dance, and make music at home!
You have registered your child in one of our Family Music classes, because you want to foster a life-long love of music, lay the groundwork for your child’s music literacy, and enable your child to enjoy the benefits of learning music. For those reasons, it’s so important that you sing, dance, and make music at home.
