BOOKHAMPTON’S MUST-HAVE CHILDREN’S BOOKS FOR DECEMBER!

Each month, our friend Jesse B. at BookHampton will suggest the latest children’s books available at their store in East Hampton. CMEE members will receive discounted prices when purchasing any of the books listed below at BookHampton.

Good Rosie by Kate DiCamillo, Illustrated by Harry Bliss – $16.99

It’s no secret if you know me that I love DiCamillo’s work for middle-grade readers and her occasional picture book for even younger readers. Her stories center around animals or people in contact with animals and deal with themes that resonate with readers young and old. Her latest picture book is about a dog named Rosie whose only friend is George, her owner. One day George and Rosie go to the dog park and Rosie is overwhelmed with the amount of other dogs around and is not sure how to make friends. A story with a lesson about finding friends and what friendship can mean.

The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend by Dan Santat – $17.99

This book might be a few years old but it is one of my favorite contemporary books for children. Dan Santat has a great illustrating style and his stories always touch on fundamental feelings we all have. The story focuses on Beekle who lives in the world of imaginary friends and he is waiting for his turn to belong to a child. He waits but doesn’t get chosen and so goes out into the real world to find a human to belong to. Wonderfully touching and well-told, I be remiss to not mention it.

Hello Lighthouse by Sophie Blackall – $18.99

I have a fascination with lighthouses, their workings, and their history. The thing I love most about lighthouses are the stories of the people who used to run them and what their lives were like while they were taking care of these strange, beautiful, and helpful structures. Sophie Blackall, a Caldecott Medalist, returns with this lovely illustrated book about a small family and their day-to-day life running a lighthouse. Kids can see how a lighthouse works and why they are important as well as what the job of a lighthouse-keeper entails.
