Letter from the Director – March 2013

Dear Friends,

I’m delighted to announce CMEE is launching a new “drop off” program during spring break this month in response to requests from members. Each morning, your children will have the opportunity to participate an array of activities, including cooking, art, nature walks, and gardening. For moms who need a night out, we’ve scheduled CMEE’s annual winter “Ladies Night” on March 14 at Tutto Il Giorno in Southampton.

This past month, CMEE was grateful to Joy O’Shaughnessy from East End Disability Associates and Kim Covell from the Flying Point Foundation for Autism for leading disability awareness training for CMEE’s staff members. They had terrific suggestions on how to make CMEE more accessible to children with special needs. If you have recommendations on how CMEE can be more inclusive, please email me or let our Visitor Services staff know when you next visit the Museum.

In addition to advising us on how to become a more inclusive learning environment, Joy shared the concept of “Asset Based Community Development,” which focuses on mobilizing resources that are already present in the community to mobilize citizens to address issues of concern. The approach mirrors CMEE’s process of asking businesses, government, and nonprofit institutions how its assets can connect to the work they are doing. If you know of any organizations that would benefit from the Museum’s assets, please contact us with their names.

Looking ahead, CMEE is proud to be partnering on programming with so many terrific East End organizations. On May 4, we’re celebrating the 4th Annual Peconic Family Fun Day at the Museum in collaboration with the Bridgehampton School Marimba Orchestra, Group for the East End, Long Pond Greenbelt, Peconic Institute, Peconic Land Trust, Ross School, Sylvester Manor, and the South Fork Natural History Museum. It’s wonderful that the list of collaborators continues to grow each year! And on May 11, CMEE is partnering with Bay Street Theatre on a production of “Martha Speaks” at the Theatre in Sag Harbor. We’re also pleased to announce the schedule of spring and summer classes on our website.

We always welcome your feedback and hope to see you soon at CMEE!
