Q&A with Kids Club Educator Sara Whitcomb

This fall, we’re delighted to offer Kids Club five days a week! The 3-hour drop-off program is designed to ensure that preschool-aged children are engaged and active while developing their skills in a fun and safe environment! We recently chatted with Kids Club educator Sara Whitcomb about her background, the importance of empathy, and the value of imagination.

Can you tell us a little bit about your background? How did you end up working with kids?

I have a strong passion for teaching, engaging and understanding our future generation. As a mom of a 5-year-old and a New York State certified educator, I understand that creating fun, child led educational experiences creates life long learners.

My first experience teaching children was at 13 years old working in a day care.  Since then, I have cared for children as a Nanny, early education teacher and substitute in intermediate schools.

What can kids and parents expect during Kids Club this fall?

During Kids Club this fall we are excited to implement a lot of hands-on investigation in an environment that fosters independence and friendship.  We will be working with local partners to bring resources from the East End directly to our kids such as fresh produce from Amber Waves Farm.

How has the pandemic changed your approach to teaching?

The pandemic has taught me that children yearn for socialization and learn best when learning from each other.

While I used to focus primarily on encouraging children to share (that can be harder to do during a pandemic) I have shifted to teaching empathy.  When you have an ability to express empathy, sharing comes naturally! Even if it is not happening directly in the classroom.

What’s something you were able to experience during your childhood  that you wish kids could still enjoy today?

As a child, I remember grabbing my bike and gathering my friends to head to our secret fort. We used our imaginations, came up with games and shared our secrets. We didn’t come home until it was dinner time!

What children’s book do you think belongs in every home library?

The books that I think every family should own are:

  • The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
  • Mix It Up by Herve Tullet
  • Press Here by Herve Tullet

I grew up reading The Giving Tree and continue to read it in my home as well as Mix It Up and Press Here.  These are just a few that I believe should be household favorites!
