Ciencia en CMEE

On June 4, eighteen students and their parents completed the first semester of Ciencia en CMEE (Science at CMEE), an afterschool program designed for families whose first language is Spanish. Developed and taught by educators Leah Oppenheimer and Barbara Blaisdell, the program, which grew out of suggestions made during CMEE’s Latino Parents Advisory Council, was underwritten by the Long Island Community Foundation. During the semester, the families learned about the natural sciences, developed their skills as observers, conducted experiments, created science-related art projects, and maintained science log books.

Another lesson was to identify a bird at CMEE and draw it. As part of the project, the families researched what the bird’s nest looked like and then created it with twigs that they found at the Museum. Finally, they prepared a diorama to display the nest and the picture of the bird, in this case, a cardinal!

Using CMEE’s boardwalk, also known as “Lucy’s Way” as a vantage point, the children drew pictures of what they observed beyond the railing.

In addition to observing their surroundings from the board walk, the families used to the new sidewalk on Bridgehampton/Sag Harbor Turnpike to visit and draw Slate Pond.
